About Xigen

Founded in 2002 as a spin-off from the University Hospital of Lausanne (CHUV) in Switzerland, Xigen SA operated as a clinical-phase biopharmaceutical company focused on developing peptide-based therapeutics. The company was co-founded by Dr. Christophe Bonny, a molecular biologist with extensive research expertise in intracellular peptides and signaling, who also served as CEO. The venture was built upon more than seven years of research into intracellular peptide mechanisms and JNK inhibition. Xigen secured significant funding to advance its pipeline, raising $21 million in a Series A round in 2005 from investors including Tilocor Life Sciences, Venture Incubator, and Initiative Capital. This was followed by a Series B round of $19.7 million in 2009, led by Tilocor, bringing its total funding to approximately $40.8 million. These funds were instrumental in advancing its lead drug candidate, XG-102, through clinical trials.

Xigen's core business centered on its proprietary technology platform, Xigen ICPT, which enabled the design and synthesis of metabolically stable, cell-penetrating peptides. This technology used proprietary carrier motifs to deliver therapeutic agents to specific intracellular targets, a mechanism intended to address diseases in inflammation, CNS, oncology, and virology. The company's business model involved leveraging this platform to develop its own drug candidates and forming strategic partnerships to commercialize them in specific therapeutic areas. A key collaboration was established with Auris Medical for the development and marketing of Xigen's peptides for inner ear disorders. Xigen's primary product candidate, XG-102, was a selective inhibitor of the c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) pathway, a critical target in programmed cell death (apoptosis). XG-102 was advanced to Phase 3 clinical trials for treating post-cataract surgery inflammation and was also investigated for conditions like hearing loss and dry eye. Despite its clinical progress and substantial funding, the company is now reported as being out of business.
