Enabling the Electrification of Non Road Mobile Machinery
About Xerotech
Xerotech is a battery technology company from Galway, Ireland, focused on the electrification of non-road mobile machinery (NRMM). The company was established in 2015 by Dr. Barry Flannery, who developed the initial concepts while completing his PhD in mechanical engineering at NUI Galway. Flannery's research into battery heating and cooling led to a novel approach to thermal management, which became a cornerstone of the company's technology. Starting in his parents' garden shed, he grew the company into a significant operation with a large facility and over 130 employees.
The company's primary market is original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in sectors like construction, agriculture, mining, and marine industries. These markets are characterized as low-volume, high-diversity, meaning they produce many different types of machines in relatively small quantities, making traditional, custom-developed battery systems economically unviable. Xerotech addresses this by supplying a configurable battery platform, similar to how diesel engines are available off-the-shelf in various sizes. Its business model revolves around selling these high-voltage lithium-ion battery packs directly to equipment manufacturers. In February 2025, liquidators were appointed to the company following a fire at its premises, which impacted its ability to secure further capital.
Xerotech's core product is the Hibernium® battery platform, a modular and scalable system built around a patented thermal management technology called Xerotherm™. This platform allows for extensive customization, enabling clients to specify energy content, voltage, dimensions, and even the battery cell chemistry. A key selling point is the elimination of design and engineering costs for customers, even for one-off prototypes. The Hibernium system is designed to be cell-agnostic, meaning it can adapt to different battery cell technologies as they emerge. The platform offers a wide range of configurations, scaling from around 10 kWh up to 300 kWh, to suit various applications from small utility vehicles to large mining trucks. This modularity allows the company to produce hundreds of different pack configurations using common tooling and manufacturing processes, reducing lead times.
