Basquevolt

Basquevolt is a Spanish company founded in June 2022, specializing in the development and production of solid-state lithium batteries. The company spun out of the CIC energiGUNE research center, leveraging over ten years of research in the field. The technology is based on a proprietary composite electrolyte patented by CIC energiGUNE and developed by a team including Professor Michel Armand. Basquevolt's CEO is Pablo Fernández Santos, who has an extensive background in the automotive industry, including at Renault.

The company's mission is to develop sustainable, safer, and competitive solid-state batteries to enable the mass deployment of electric transportation, stationary energy storage, and advanced portable devices. The main markets served are the automotive, heavy transport, and stationary energy sectors. The business model is focused on becoming a key electrolyte supplier in Europe and producing its own battery cells. Basquevolt aims to reduce battery pack costs by around 30% and the CO2 footprint of production by approximately 40%. The company's products include a polymer composite electrolyte and a high silicon content anode, which are designed to offer higher energy density and safety compared to conventional liquid electrolyte lithium-ion batteries.

Basquevolt launched as a public-private initiative with the Basque Government and a consortium of founding investors, including Iberdrola, CIE Automotive, Enagás, and EIT InnoEnergy. Located in the Álava Technology Park in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain, the company has secured significant funding, including a Series A round in March 2025, to accelerate its industrialization. The company plans to commission a pilot production line in 2025 and begin mass production of battery cells by 2027, with a target capacity of 10GWh.
