Xceedium

Xceedium operated as a network security software company specializing in Privileged Access Management (PAM) solutions before its acquisition by CA Technologies in August 2015. The company was founded in 2000 by David Van and David Cheung after splitting from Lucid Technologies Group, a firm they established in 1995. The core technology originated from an internal tool developed to provide secure remote access for consultants working on sensitive customer systems, which evolved into their first product, Xceedium GateKeeper.

The company targeted mid-to-large enterprises and government agencies, addressing the security risks associated with privileged users and accounts. Xceedium's business model focused on selling its software through a global partner network to clients in sectors like finance, retail, telecom, healthcare, and government. The firm was venture-backed, securing a total of $26.3 million in funding over several rounds from investors including ArrowPath Venture Partners, Nationwide Mutual Capital, and Western Technology Investment.

Xceedium's flagship product, Xsuite, was developed by integrating its GateKeeper technology with the acquired Cloakware Password Authority. This platform provided a comprehensive PAM solution designed for hybrid-cloud environments. Key features of Xsuite included a vault for privileged account credentials, role-based access control, command filtering, and the ability to monitor and record privileged user sessions to create an audit trail. The product was designed to help organizations enforce the principle of least privilege, ensuring users and systems only have access to the resources essential for their tasks. Deployed as a physical or virtual appliance or an Amazon Machine Image, Xsuite helped clients meet compliance mandates such as PCI DSS, FISMA, and HIPAA. Following the acquisition, Xsuite was integrated into CA Technologies' product line and rebranded as CA Privileged Access Manager.
