Cloakware operates as a specialized provider of software security solutions, focusing on protecting applications and digital assets for a diverse client base that spans enterprise, government, media and entertainment, gaming, and connected transport sectors. Initially a privately held company, Cloakware was acquired by Irdeto, a subsidiary of the Naspers media group, on November 30, 2007, for $72.5 million. This acquisition was a strategic move for Irdeto to broaden its content security offerings and expand its market reach, particularly into North America.

The company's core business revolves around providing technologies that make software tamper-resistant. Its main product, Cloakware® Software Protection, is a suite of tools and libraries that embed security directly into an application's source code during the build process. This methodology protects against reverse engineering, tampering, and data exfiltration, allowing applications to be deployed securely even in hostile or untrusted environments. The technology utilizes advanced techniques such as data and control flow transformations, anti-debugging, and white-box cryptography. White-box cryptography is a key feature, designed to hide critical data and keys within the cryptographic algorithm itself, making them secure even if an attacker has full visibility into the operations.

Cloakware serves a notable roster of clients, including major corporations like Texas Instruments, Vodafone, and State Street. The business model is centered on providing these security solutions to companies that need to protect their intellectual property, revenue streams, and sensitive data. The company's offerings were historically divided into two main lines: Datacenter solutions and Consumer Product solutions. The Datacenter solutions, such as the Cloakware Password Authority, focused on managing privileged passwords for enterprise IT infrastructure. This password management business was later acquired by Xceedium in 2011. The Consumer Product solutions protect software and content on a wide array of devices like PCs, set-top boxes, mobile phones, and media players. As part of Irdeto, Cloakware continues to secure digital assets and has evolved to offer its protection capabilities as managed services, some of which are augmented by machine learning.
