Wisense Technologies
Enhancing consumer vehicle safety and autonomy by using AI and semiconductor technologies
About Wisense Technologies
Wisense Technologies, an Israeli autotech company founded in 2018 by Moshik Cohen, developed advanced radar technology for autonomous vehicles. Cohen, who holds a doctorate in electrical engineering and has prior experience at Intel and Israel Aerospace Industries, served as the initial manager before Ofer Shneyour took over as CEO in the company's final months. The company operated largely without media coverage but was known in the industry to be significantly advanced in developing a chip for autonomous vehicles.
The firm focused on addressing the poor angular resolution of commercial automotive radar, a critical factor for distinguishing between objects in cluttered environments. Wisense developed a family of algorithms called Radar signal Reconstruction using Self Supervision (R2S2). This system utilized deep learning neural networks to enhance the angular resolution of automotive radar by four times without needing additional physical radar channels, which would typically increase system complexity and cost. The technology worked by using AI to reconstruct data that additional physical radar channels would have received. This approach aimed to improve the safety and autonomy of consumer vehicles, particularly in adverse weather conditions where cameras and LiDAR systems often underperform.
Wisense secured approximately $37 million in total funding from notable investors, including Shmuel Harlap, an early investor in Mobileye, and Eyal Waldman, the founder of Mellanox. Despite its technological advancements and having dozens of customers, including major players in the autonomous vehicle sector, the company faced challenges. In November 2023, Wisense laid off 90% of its roughly 70 employees. By February 2024, the company officially announced it was shutting down and liquidating its assets.
