All-weather terahertz vision sensors for autonomous systems
About TeraDAR
TeraDAR is a Boston-based developer of imaging sensors for the automotive, defense, and security industries. The company was founded in 2020 by CEO Matthew Carey, CTO Gregory Charvat, and Chief Architect Nicholas Saiz. The founding team combines expertise from MIT and Stanford in fields such as robotics, electro-mechanical engineering, radar systems, and chip design. Charvat is a recognized authority in radar imaging, having previously served as CTO at Humatics and contributed to innovations at MIT Lincoln Laboratory.
The company is pioneering the commercial use of the terahertz (THz) portion of the electromagnetic spectrum for sensing applications. Its core product is the Modular Terahertz Engine (MTE), a solid-state, customizable chip architecture that provides high-resolution, long-range imaging that can operate reliably in adverse weather conditions like rain, snow, and fog. TeraDAR states its technology provides up to 20 times the resolution of current automotive radar systems, combining the all-weather performance of radar with the high-resolution detail of lidar. The MTE platform is designed to be adaptable for various levels of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving, from Level 1 to Level 5.
TeraDAR's business model focuses on supplying its sensor systems to global automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and Tier 1 suppliers. The company has reported active collaborations with eight major automotive partners and is targeting mass production for vehicle programs by 2028. While the primary market is automotive, TeraDAR also targets applications in defense, healthcare, security, and industrial automation. The company recently emerged from stealth after securing $150 million in a Series B funding round led by VXI Capital, with participation from investors including Lockheed Martin Ventures, Capricorn Investment Group, Ibex Investors, and MIT's The Engine Ventures. This brought its total funding to $175M.
