WiNetworks
WiNetworks engages in the development and integration of WiMAX network technologies
About WiNetworks
WiNetworks, founded in 2003 by Effi Atad, specialized in the development of WiMAX network technologies for both mobile and land-line phones. The company was established by a team of wireless industry veterans who were early proponents of WiMAX technology. Over its lifetime, the company secured approximately $28 million in funding through several rounds, with investors including Cedar Fund, Columbia Capital, Evergreen Venture Partners, and Rho Ventures.
The company's core business was centered on providing systems based on the WiMAX 802.16e mobile broadband wireless standard. Its technology was utilized by large private networks and service providers to deliver mobile broadband connectivity across metropolitan areas. WiNetworks offered multi-service gateways that could integrate with various home wiring systems, including telephone lines, coaxial cables, power lines, and wireless setups. A key achievement for the company was being the first to develop a small form-factor base station compliant with the IEEE 802.16e standard, which also received WiMAX Forum certification for Wave 2, including MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) functionality.
The product portfolio included compact and pico base stations like the WiN7000 and WiN7200, as well as customer-premises equipment (CPE) for broadcast operators. These products were designed to be interoperable with third-party devices and various ASN gateway vendors, offering an open end-to-end solution. A notable feature was a product mode that allowed full operation without an ASN gateway, which enhanced system robustness while reducing costs and complexity, making it particularly suitable for private network operators. On September 17, 2009, WiNetworks was acquired by RuggedCom Inc. for approximately $14 million, consisting of $9 million in cash and the assumption of $5 million in debt. Following the acquisition, WiNetworks' products were integrated into RuggedCom's portfolio as the RuggedMAX product line, which is now part of Siemens' RUGGEDCOM WIN family of private wireless broadband solutions.
