Wildfire Interactive

Marketing · Palo Alto, United States · Founded 2008

A provider of enterprise social media marketing software MoreLess

Wildfire Interactive, founded in 2008 by Victoria Ransom and Alain Chuard, emerged from a direct need identified by the founders while running their adventure travel company, Access Trips. They required a more effective way to run a social-marketing campaign and decided to build their own tool, initially named Promotion Builder. This tool's success prompted them to establish it as a separate software-as-a-service (SaaS) business. Ransom, originally from New Zealand, and Chuard, from Switzerland, met at Macalester College and both had early careers in finance before starting their first venture together. Their complementary skills, with Ransom leading strategy and operations and Chuard driving the product vision, were instrumental to the company's growth.

The company provided a social media marketing application that enabled businesses to manage, optimize, and measure their presence across platforms like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Pinterest. The platform allowed clients to create customized campaigns such as sweepstakes, contests, quizzes, and coupons. Wildfire served a broad range of clients, from small businesses to major global brands including Pepsi, Unilever, and Sony, eventually supporting over 16,000 customers. Revenue was initially generated on a per-campaign basis, with an initial fee plus a daily charge depending on the features used. The company later faced pressure to transition to a subscription-based model offering more comprehensive page and analytics management.

Wildfire's journey began with a $250,000 grant from the Facebook Fund in 2008, and it achieved $100,000 in revenue in its first month. The company secured a $4 million Series A funding round in May 2010, followed by a $10 million round in 2012 from investors including Summit Partners, Accel Partners, and the Founder's Fund. Growing to nearly 400 employees, the company gained significant market traction. This culminated in its acquisition by Google in July 2012 for a reported $450 million. Following the acquisition, Wildfire was integrated into Google's DoubleClick ad technology platform in 2014.
