Consumer service that lets people create a website, blog or online store MoreLess
Weebly is a web hosting and development company that provides a platform for individuals and small businesses to create websites, blogs, and online stores. It was founded in 2006 by college friends David Rusenko, Chris Fanini, and Dan Veltri while they were students at Penn State. The idea originated from the founders' own frustration with the complexity of creating websites, as they sought a simpler way for friends to build online portfolios for job interviews without needing coding skills.
The trio developed the initial product in their dorm room and, after an early beta launch, were accepted into the prestigious Y Combinator startup incubator in winter 2007. This prompted them to leave Penn State and relocate to San Francisco to pursue Weebly full-time. The company's core offering is a user-friendly, drag-and-drop website builder that allows users to create a professional online presence without technical expertise. The platform automatically generates a mobile version of each site and includes tools for blogging and e-commerce.
Weebly operates on a freemium business model. It provides a free plan with basic features and a Weebly-branded domain, which serves as an entry point for users. Revenue is primarily generated through tiered subscription plans (Personal, Professional, and Performance) that offer advanced features such as the ability to use a custom domain, remove ads, access advanced analytics, and utilize more powerful e-commerce tools. Additional income comes from transaction fees on sales made through the platform's e-commerce stores and an App Center where users can purchase third-party applications to extend their site's functionality.
A significant milestone in the company's history was its acquisition by Square, Inc. (now Block, Inc.) in April 2018 for approximately $365 million. This strategic move was designed to merge Square's expertise in in-person payments and point-of-sale systems with Weebly's online presence, creating an integrated omnichannel solution for small businesses. Following the acquisition, Weebly's technology was used to build Square Online, and Weebly is now part of the Square suite of business tools. At the time of the acquisition, Weebly had over 625,000 paid subscribers, with a significant portion located outside the U.S., which helped accelerate Square's global expansion.
