Vopium A/S, a Danish telecommunications company established in 2006 by Tanveer Sharif, operated in the mobile VoIP sector, aiming to reduce the cost of international calls for mobile users. Sharif, with a background as a senior telecom professional, identified the market need for more affordable global communication, leading to the creation of Vopium. The company's core offering was a mobile application that integrated Voice over IP (VoIP) and traditional GSM technologies, allowing users to make international calls at rates comparable to local calls. This service was designed for seamless integration, permitting users to retain their existing mobile number, SIM card, and network operator. The application intelligently routed calls over WiFi, 3G/4G data, or local access numbers to ensure cost-effectiveness without sacrificing call quality, a feature it termed 'VoIP over GSM'.
Vopium's business model targeted both individual consumers and business clients. For individuals, it offered a downloadable application available across a wide range of platforms, including iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, and Symbian, which supported over 900 different phone models. Revenue from this segment was generated through prepaid calling credits. For the business-to-business market, Vopium developed several solutions. These included tailored call plans for corporate clients, a White Label Partner Program that allowed other companies to offer Vopium's services under their own brand, and a Reseller Partner Program providing a dedicated portal for partners to sell international calling solutions.
The company experienced significant early traction, reporting over one million users across 46 countries. A notable milestone in its corporate history was its listing on the NYSE Euronext stock exchange in Paris in 2010, which provided the capital for further expansion and technological development. This public listing marked a period of ambition for the firm as it sought to scale its operations globally. However, the company later faced challenges and ultimately ceased its primary operations. Vopium filed for bankruptcy, and its assets, including its technology platform and customer base, were acquired by the Swedish operator Mundio in 2015. Following the acquisition, the Vopium brand and service were discontinued.
