VoloMetrix
Analytics company improving worker productivity and effectiveness
About VoloMetrix
VoloMetrix was a people analytics software company founded in 2011 by Ryan Fuller and Chris Brahm. Fuller, who served as CEO, brought a background in management consulting from Bain & Company, along with experience in building and designing enterprise software and business intelligence solutions. This combination of expertise directly informed the company's mission to provide data-driven insights into workforce productivity. The company was established on the premise that an organization's most valuable asset is its people and aimed to quantify the link between employee behavior and business outcomes.
The firm developed a software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform that specialized in organizational and people analytics for large enterprises. It served clients including Fortune 100 and Global 2000 companies like Symantec, Seagate, Facebook, and Qualcomm. The business model centered on analyzing anonymized, aggregated data from a company's existing collaboration tools, such as email and calendar systems, to generate insights without requiring manual data entry. This approach provided a comprehensive view of how time and resources were allocated across an organization.
The core service involved creating visualizations and dashboards that revealed how employees and teams spent their time, collaborated internally, and engaged with external customers and partners. The technology was designed to identify process bottlenecks, measure organizational health through metrics like the Organizational Load Index (OLI) and Network Efficiency Index (NEI), and help management optimize team structures. By providing objective feedback, the platform enabled individuals and managers to better align their activities with strategic priorities. In August 2014, VoloMetrix announced it had filed a patent for its proprietary technology.
After securing approximately $17 million in funding through Series A and B rounds from investors like Shasta Ventures and Split Rock Partners, VoloMetrix was acquired by Microsoft in September 2015. The acquisition was a strategic move by Microsoft to integrate VoloMetrix's analytics capabilities into its Office 365 and Delve Organizational Analytics platforms, enhancing its own offerings aimed at reinventing productivity. Following the acquisition, the VoloMetrix technology became a core component of what is now Microsoft's Workplace Analytics.
