About Vexata

Vexata emerged in 2013 as an enterprise storage contender, founded by Chief Executive Officer Zahid Hussain and Chief Technology Officer Surya Varanasi. The founding team brought significant experience from prior roles at major technology firms, including EMC and VMware, where they identified a market opportunity for a new approach to data storage that went beyond incremental disk improvements. Their vision was to address the performance bottlenecks that enterprises faced when running data-intensive applications, moving beyond traditional storage architectures toward a more software-defined model.

The company operated in the high-performance data storage market, specifically targeting enterprise clients with demanding applications in sectors like finance, government, and media & entertainment. Vexata's business model initially involved direct sales of its hardware and software systems, later shifting to a channel-based model to leverage partners and expand its reach. The core of its offering was designed to provide extremely high throughput and low latency for large, active datasets, which are critical for workloads such as predictive analytics, AI, machine learning, and online transaction processing.

Vexata's flagship product was the VX-100 all-flash array, which launched in 2017 after the company had operated in stealth mode, securing $54 million in funding from investors including Mayfield, Intel Capital, and Lightspeed Venture Partners. This system utilized NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) technology, including NAND and Optane drives, connected via NVMe over Fabrics (NVMe-oF) links. A key differentiator was its patented active data architecture, which was engineered to deliver significant performance gains without requiring customers to re-architect their existing IT infrastructure or application stacks. Later, the company unbundled its software as the VX-Cloud Data Acceleration Platform, allowing it to run on commodity servers.

Despite attracting notable clients like the Australian Department of Defense and securing a reselling deal with Fujitsu, Vexata faced challenges in converting pilot projects into sustainable revenue as an independent startup. In July 2019, the company was acquired by StorCentric, a holding company building a portfolio of storage technology firms. The acquisition was intended to integrate Vexata's high-performance NVMe technology with the product lines and established channel network of other StorCentric companies like Nexsan. While co-founder Surya Varanasi joined StorCentric, Zahid Hussain did not.
