Urotronic
A Minnesota based, medical device company, making an exciting innovation in urethral stricture treatment
About Urotronic
Urotronic, Inc. operates as a medical device company focused on developing drug-device combination solutions for the interventional urology market. Established in 2015 and headquartered in Plymouth, Minnesota, the company was founded by Lixiao Wang, who serves as the Chief Technology Officer and Chairman. Wang has an extensive background in the medical device field, including a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry and prior roles at Boston Scientific and as a co-founder of Lutonix, Inc. David Perry, who joined as President and CEO in 2015, brings significant experience in global marketing and sales from previous leadership positions at American Medical Systems and Boston Scientific.
The company’s core business revolves around its proprietary Optilume® Drug-Coated Balloon (DCB) technology. This technology addresses conditions such as urethral strictures (narrowing of the urethra) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or enlarged prostate. The business model centers on developing and commercializing these minimally invasive surgical therapies (MIST) for urologists and hospitals. The firm generates revenue through the sale and licensing of its Optilume systems. A key milestone was the acquisition of Urotronic by Laborie Medical Technologies in a deal announced in September 2023 and completed in October 2023. The transaction included an upfront cash payment of $255 million with potential for an additional $345 million in milestone payments.
Urotronic's flagship product, the Optilume® system, represents a significant evolution in treating urinary tract obstructions. It functions through a dual-action mechanism: a semi-compliant balloon is used to mechanically dilate the blocked passage, creating micro-fissures in the tissue. Concurrently, the balloon delivers a coating of paclitaxel, an antiproliferative drug, directly to the urethral wall. This drug inhibits the cell proliferation and fibrotic scar tissue formation that commonly lead to recurrence after traditional dilation procedures. The Optilume® BPH Catheter System, specifically designed for enlarged prostates, uses a proprietary double-lobe balloon to create a split in the prostate's lateral lobes, while the paclitaxel helps maintain this opening during healing. Clinical trials have demonstrated sustained improvements in urine flow and symptom scores for up to four years, without the common side effects of traditional surgeries, such as erectile or ejaculatory dysfunction. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and is designed to be straightforward for physicians to adopt.
