About NOVASYS MEDICAL

Novasys Medical, Inc. was a venture-backed medical device company established in 1999, with a focus on developing new therapies for women's health. The company's operations were centered in Newark, California. The founding President and CEO, Debra Reisenthel, brought a background in respiratory care and a wealth of experience in the medical device industry to the company's leadership. Her career reflects a recurring drive to build companies that can improve or save lives.

The company's landmark achievement was the development and commercialization of the Renessa® System, a non-surgical device for treating female stress urinary incontinence (SUI). This condition affects millions of women, and Novasys Medical aimed to provide a less invasive alternative to surgery. The Renessa System utilized radiofrequency energy to gently heat tissue in the lower urinary tract, which would then firm up upon healing, providing better resistance against leakage. This procedure could be performed in a physician's office in about 20 minutes under local anesthesia, offering a significant reduction in recovery time compared to surgical options.

A significant milestone for Novasys Medical was receiving FDA clearance for the Renessa System in August 2005, following a successful multicenter clinical trial. The company's business model revolved around the sale of the Renessa System to gynecologists, urogynecologists, and urologists. To fund its operations, development, and commercialization efforts, Novasys Medical secured significant venture capital, raising a total of $121 million over four funding rounds. A notable funding round was a Series D in 2008, which raised $49.5 million and was led by Versant Ventures, with participation from other prominent investors. By 2010, Debra Reisenthel had departed from her role as CEO and was succeeded by Scott Cramer, who had a background in successfully leading and selling other medical device companies.
