About Unilever
The story of Unilever begins not with one, but two distinct and powerful entities in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In the United Kingdom, William Hesketh Lever and his brother James founded Lever Brothers in 1885, revolutionizing the soap industry with the introduction of Sunlight, the world's first packaged soap. Meanwhile, in the Netherlands, two of the first commercial margarine producers, Jurgens and Van den Bergh, decided to pool their interests in 1908 to navigate a competitive market. These two industrial forces, one in soap and the other in margarine, operated in overlapping worlds of oils and fats. Recognizing that collaboration would be more fruitful than competition, they made a landmark decision. On September 2, 1929, the Dutch margarine producer Margarine Unie and the British soapmaker Lever Brothers agreed to merge, officially forming Unilever in 1930. This amalgamation was described at the time as one of the biggest industrial mergers in European history. From its inception, Unilever was a multinational entity, expanding its operations into Africa and Latin America in the 1930s. The company's growth was significantly fueled by acquisitions, including well-known brands like Lipton in 1971, Brooke Bond in 1984, Ben & Jerry's in 2000, and Dollar Shave Club in 2016. Throughout its history, Unilever has undergone significant restructuring, shifting its focus to core business areas and adapting to global consumer needs, solidifying its position as a giant in the consumer goods industry.
