About Tynt
Tynt Technologies, established in Boulder, Colorado in 2020, operates in the advanced materials and smart home markets, focusing on the development of dynamic windows. The company was co-founded by CEO Ameen Saafir, COO John Dwyer, CTO Dr. Tyler Hernandez, Chief Scientist Professor Mike McGehee, and Michael Strand. The venture commercializes breakthrough research in Reversible Metal Electrodeposition (RME) that originated at Stanford University and CU Boulder. Saafir, a Stanford alumnus with two decades of experience in deep-tech, including roles at Halio, Samsung, and DuPont Displays, identified an opportunity to disrupt the residential window market. He teamed up with his former graduate school advisor, McGehee, and fellow Stanford PhD graduate, Hernandez, who co-invented the core RME technology.
Tynt's core business revolves around its proprietary RME technology, a novel approach to smart glass. Unlike conventional electrochromic technologies that often have limitations in color neutrality and tinting range, RME uses a small electrical voltage to deposit a thin, neutral-colored metal layer onto a surface, blocking light. Reversing the voltage dissolves this layer, returning the glass to a state of high clarity. This process allows the windows to transition from up to 90% visible light transmission to a full blackout state of less than 0.1%, a feature that also provides complete privacy. The technology is bi-stable, meaning it only consumes power when changing the tint level, not to maintain it.
The company's business model is centered on providing this technology as a platform that can be applied directly to glass or as a laminate-ready film, serving both rigid and flexible applications. The primary target market is residential homeowners, with plans to expand into commercial spaces and other verticals like automotive and augmented reality wearables. Tynt aims to deliver a cost-effective solution compared to existing high-end smart window products, which have seen limited adoption in the residential sector. The company has partnered with residential skylight manufacturers to integrate its technology into insulating glass units (IGUs) for product validation. Tynt has raised $16.8 million in funding from investors including Starlight Ventures and Prime Impact Fund to scale its technology and prepare for product launch.
