Tripda
Community-based intercity carpooling and ridesharing platform
About Tripda
Tripda was a community-based, long-distance carpooling platform launched in 2014 by co-founders Pedro Meduna, Adi Vaxman, Eduardo Del Guerra Prota, and Joe McFarlane. Headquartered in New York City, the company's primary mission was to connect drivers with empty seats to passengers heading in the same direction, aiming to reduce travel costs and environmental impact. The platform distinguished itself from competitors like Uber by focusing on intercity travel rather than local rides.
The business model centered on the sharing economy. Drivers would list their planned long-distance trips, and the platform would suggest a price for passengers, although the final cost was set by the driver. To build a trusted community, Tripda required users to log in via Facebook and allowed passengers and drivers to rate each other after a trip. It also offered a "Ladies Only" option for all-female rides to enhance safety.
Backed by German incubator Rocket Internet, Tripda raised a total of $11 million in two funding rounds, including a Series A round in January 2015. This capital fueled a rapid global expansion into 13 countries, including the US, Brazil, Mexico, and several nations in Asia. Despite reaching over a million travelers, the company faced significant challenges. Citing high operating costs, long-term monetization concerns, competitive pressure, and the inability to secure a Series B funding round, Tripda announced it was shutting down its operations in early 2016.
