Established in 2010 in Florence, Italy, Treedom operates as a B-Corporation with a distinct business model centered on environmental and social impact. The company was founded by Federico Garcea and Tommaso Ciurnelli. Garcea, with a background in economics, and Ciurnelli, an IT expert and developer, conceived the idea after observing a farmer using Facebook to promote adopting his fruit trees. This inspired them to create a digital platform that allows individuals and corporations to plant trees remotely and follow their growth online.

Treedom's core business involves selling trees that are then planted in agroforestry projects across Africa, Latin America, Asia, and Italy. These projects are executed in partnership with local NGOs and smallholder farmers, who receive training and financial support. This approach provides environmental benefits, such as CO2 absorption and biodiversity protection, alongside social advantages like food security and income opportunities for local communities. The company's revenue is generated directly from the sale of these trees. Clients range from individuals looking to make a personal environmental contribution or give a gift, to corporations seeking to fulfill corporate social responsibility (CSR) objectives, engage employees, or launch marketing campaigns.

The service is facilitated through its online platform where each planted tree is geolocated, photographed, and has a dedicated online page. This feature, referred to as the 'Tree Diary', allows the owner to track the project's story and the tree's development, creating a tangible connection between the sponsor and the impact of their contribution. Since its inception, the company has facilitated the planting of millions of trees, involving a substantial number of local farmers and a diverse portfolio of corporate clients. Treedom became a certified B Corp in 2014, formally recognizing its commitment to high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability.
