These trackers connect to a smartphone app via Bluetooth, allowing users to ring their Tile when it is within a certain range. If the item is out of Bluetooth range, the app displays its last known location on a map. The Tile network, which is composed of all Tile app users, can anonymously and securely help find lost items. When a user marks an item as lost, if another Tile user comes within range of the lost item, the owner is notified of its location.

Tile operates on a freemium model. The basic tracking features are free to use, but the company also offers a premium subscription service that includes features like smart alerts (notifying the user when they leave an item behind), free battery replacements, and a 30-day location history.
