In 1984, before the internet was in every home and GPS in every car, the Dutch company Tele Atlas was founded with a vision to digitize the world's maps. Spearheaded by co-founder Alain De Taeye, the company embarked on the monumental task of transforming physical maps into digital data. This was the foundational work for what would become a revolution in navigation. The company focused on creating detailed digital maps and content for the burgeoning location-based services and navigation industries. By the early 2000s, Tele Atlas was a key player, providing the essential data that powered a wide range of in-car navigation systems and early internet mapping applications. The company expanded its global footprint, notably acquiring the US-based mapping pioneer Etak in 2000. In 2005, Tele Atlas went public on the Euronext Amsterdam exchange, a move that valued the company at €1.7 billion and provided capital for further growth. A pivotal chapter began in 2007 when personal navigation device maker TomTom made a €2 billion offer to acquire Tele Atlas. This move kicked off a bidding war with rival Garmin, which saw TomTom ultimately raise its offer to €2.9 billion. After securing regulatory approval, TomTom completed the acquisition in 2008, taking full ownership of its map supplier. The deal highlighted the critical value of owning the underlying map data in the rapidly growing navigation market.
