Teambition

Teambition operates as a cloud-based project management and team collaboration tool, now positioned as a core component of Alibaba Group's digital collaboration offerings alongside DingTalk. Founded in 2011 by Qi Junyuan, Zeqing Zhang, and Jiang Xiang, the Shanghai-based company was established as one of China's earliest SaaS products for team collaboration. Qi Junyuan's inspiration for Teambition stemmed from the collaboration challenges he faced during his first entrepreneurial venture, a platform for online medical consultations. This experience led him to develop a tool designed to facilitate seamless teamwork.

The company provides a comprehensive suite of solutions catering to a diverse client base, including industries such as internet, retail, and manufacturing. Its platform is designed to manage the entire project lifecycle, from planning and execution to monitoring and closing. Teambition offers features like visual project and task management, document sharing, real-time communication, and robust data analytics. It supports both "Kanban" and "Scrum" agile methodologies, making it a favored tool for R&D and agile development teams. The platform is accessible via desktop and mobile apps, allowing for on-the-go project management. Revenue is generated through paid enterprise plans which offer advanced features for larger companies.

A significant milestone in Teambition's history was its acquisition by Alibaba in March 2019 for a reported $100 million. Prior to the acquisition, Teambition had successfully raised $17.4 million over five funding rounds from notable investors including Tencent, IDG Capital, and Northern Light Venture Capital. The acquisition integrated Teambition into Alibaba's ecosystem, specifically with DingTalk, to create a more comprehensive enterprise service offering. This strategic move aligned with Alibaba's focus on expanding its enterprise-facing services. Post-acquisition, founder Qi Junyuan joined Alibaba's intelligent cloud business group before eventually moving to Feishu, a competitor, in early 2023.
