Tambo
Peruvian convenience store chain offering diverse consumer goods
About Tambo
Tambo is a Peruvian chain of convenience stores, also known as "practi-tiendas," that has become a dominant force in the country's retail sector. It was founded on April 1, 2015, by the Lindley family's Great Retail group, with the first store opening in the Comas district of Lima. The Lindley family are the descendants of the creators of the iconic Peruvian soft drink, Inca Kola. The company is part of the Lindcorp corporate group, which also operates Aruma (beauty) and Comidas Gourmet.
The launch of Tambo marked a significant shift in Peru's convenience store landscape, which was previously dominated by stores located within gas stations. The company embarked on an aggressive expansion plan, reaching 100 stores by 2016 and 400 by 2019. While the COVID-19 pandemic temporarily slowed this growth, the chain resumed its expansion in 2022. As of early 2024, Tambo had over 480 locations and plans to reach 540 by the end of the year, strengthening its presence in Lima and expanding into other regions like Chiclayo, Trujillo, Piura, Chimbote, and Ica. The current CEO is Bruno Fullone, who was appointed in March 2024.
Tambo's business model focuses on providing a modern, accessible shopping experience that combines the best of traditional bodegas and modern retail. Stores are strategically located in high-traffic areas, offering a wide variety of products including groceries, snacks, beverages, prepared foods, and personal care items. In addition to retail sales, Tambo generates revenue through services like bill payments and public transport card recharges. The brand's name and color scheme are inspired by Peruvian heritage, with "Tambo" referencing the ancient Inca roadside inns (tampus) and the colors purple and yellow symbolizing national traditions and creativity.
