Surfkitchen
Remotely-managed user interface platform for mobile operators.
About Surfkitchen
Surfkitchen was a software developer that provided user interface and application management platforms for the mobile telecommunications industry.Founded in 1999 and formerly known as Calaba Limited, the UK-based company specialized in creating remotely-managed handset interfaces, or 'mobile shells'. Its core product was a software platform that enabled telecom companies to control the user experience and streamline the delivery of mobile internet applications and services on mass-market devices. This allowed clients, which included major operators like T-Mobile USA and Orange, to deploy a consistent, branded interface across a range of different handsets. The firm's business model was centered on licensing this platform to mobile network operators, helping them overcome usability and service discovery challenges. The technology was a key tool for operators to maintain brand presence and manage their on-device portals before the widespread adoption of modern smartphone operating systems.Surfkitchen's journey involved a series of corporate acquisitions, reflecting consolidation in the mobile technology services sector. In February 2011, the company was acquired by Teleca, a Swedish technology conglomerate. Subsequently, Teleca merged with Symphony Services in 2012 to form Symphony Teleca. This entity was then acquired by Harman International Industries in a deal announced in January 2015 and completed in April 2015, with Symphony Teleca's operations being rebranded as Harman Connected Services. The acquisition chain concluded in March 2017 when Samsung Electronics acquired Harman, which now operates as a standalone subsidiary.
