STELLS
Private space company developing power technologies
About STELLS
STELLS Space Corp., a Canadian space technology firm, was established in November 2021 by Chief Executive Officer Alex Kapralov and Chief Technology Officer Vitali Ioussoupov. Initially self-funded by Kapralov, who has a background with ventures like Doncaster Group and PixFuture, the company secured its first seed funding round in December 2021, led by AMKA Holdings Inc. The firm's direction originated from an effort to develop a scientific lunar rover, which pivoted after identifying a critical market need: supplying power to assets operating in the permanently shadowed regions of the Moon.
The company is addressing the challenge of powering equipment during the cold lunar night and in dark craters, a significant hurdle for scientific, mining, and exploration missions. STELLS operates on a business-to-business model, positioning itself as a power utility for other commercial and governmental space missions on the lunar surface. Its primary offering is the Mobile Power Rover (MPR-1), a medium-sized rover designed to generate and deliver electricity. The business model centers on providing power as a service, enabling clients to extend mission lifespans and reduce operational costs without developing their own complex power solutions.
The MPR-1's operational concept involves the rover positioning a wireless charging box (WCB) in a shadowed area, such as a crater floor. It then connects to the WCB via a physical cord and moves to a sunlit location to deploy its solar panels. The generated solar power is transmitted through the cord to the WCB's batteries, which then distributes the energy to nearby rovers via wireless charging. Client rovers would need a compatible port and could navigate to the charging station using a beacon or visual systems. In addition to its hardware focus, STELLS announced in January 2024 the formation of a team to develop AI-driven software to automate space mission applications and enhance decision-making processes.
