StarVOX
A leading provider of next generation telephony network software for service providers
About StarVOX
StarVox Communications, Inc. operated as a facilities-based telecommunications provider headquartered in San Jose, California, with a focus on next-generation voice services. The company was established around 1998, initially creating equipment to extend private branch exchange (PBX) functionalities before pivoting its strategy to the emerging Voice over IP (VoIP) market. Under the leadership of its then-President and CEO, Al Wokas, StarVox positioned itself to offer cost-effective telecommunication solutions to small, medium, and large businesses.
The company's business model centered on providing wholesale and retail voice services through its proprietary domestic and international VoIP networks. Its domestic network featured over 300 Points of Presence (POPs), enabling it to serve a significant portion of U.S. business locations. Revenue was generated by offering these converged voice and data services, which aimed to reduce client communication costs by 20% to 40%. StarVox worked through various channels, including ISPs and other carriers, providing a complete, brandable "turnkey" package for its partners.
A key product was the "StarVox VoIP Trunking with VPN," a software solution launched in 2001 that ran on HP servers controlling Cisco voice gateways. This platform allowed service providers to offer corporate voice VPN services over an IP network, routing calls between corporate sites while bypassing the traditional public switched telephone network (PSTN) for cost savings. The system supported both H.323 and SS7 signaling protocols to manage calls within the IP network and those directed to the public network. A significant corporate milestone occurred in April 2006, when StarVox entered into a merger agreement with U.S. Wireless Data, Inc., a transaction that was finalized in March 2007. The company is now listed as being out of business.
