About Spirit Aerosystems

Ever wondered who builds the massive fuselages and wings for the planes you fly in? A huge part of the answer is Spirit AeroSystems. They are one of the world's largest manufacturers of aerostructures for commercial airplanes, defense platforms, and business jets. In short, they make the critical skeletons of aircraft, which is a massively important role in the global aerospace supply chain. The story starts in 2005. At the time, Boeing was looking to divest its commercial airplane manufacturing operations in Wichita, Kansas, and Tulsa, Oklahoma. A private equity firm, Onex Corporation, saw an opportunity and purchased these assets, forming Spirit AeroSystems. So, Spirit wasn't born in a garage but was spun out of the world's largest aerospace company. The founding CEO was Jeff Turner, who had previously been the general manager of the Wichita division under Boeing. This new, independent Spirit immediately became a critical supplier to its former parent, signing a deal to be the exclusive provider of fuselages for the best-selling Boeing 737, along with other key components for the 7-series jets. The company went public just a year later, listing on the NYSE in 2006. Over the years, Spirit expanded its customer base, making parts for Airbus, Bombardier, and others, as well as making key acquisitions to grow its defense and aftermarket businesses. However, the company's fate has remained tightly linked to Boeing's. This became especially clear during the 737 MAX crises and more recent quality control issues that have put intense scrutiny on both companies. Today, Spirit AeroSystems finds itself at a crossroads. Facing financial pressures and production challenges, the company is in discussions to be re-acquired by Boeing. The potential deal aims to stabilize the 737 supply chain by reintegrating this critical piece back into the fold. The next chapter for Spirit will likely involve a return to its roots, bringing its journey full circle.
