The company was founded by Rick Svetkoff, a former U.S. Navy pilot and later a commercial airline captain for Continental Airlines. His journey began with the purchase of a single F-104 for airshow performances, which evolved into the Starfighters Demonstration Team with a fleet of three jets. Recognizing the burgeoning commercial space market, Svetkoff transitioned the fleet's purpose from exhibition to a commercial enterprise, founding Starfighters Inc. in 1995 and later evolving into Starfighters Space to focus on aerospace applications. He bootstrapped the company initially, later securing a loan from Space Florida and, in 2022, its first investment from Fortuna Investments.

Starfighters Space's business model leverages its unique fleet for multiple revenue streams. The primary business is providing air-launch services for small satellites. Using the F-104 as a reusable, piloted first stage, the company can carry payloads to an altitude of approximately 45,000 feet for launch. Its STARLAUNCH I rocket is designed for sub-orbital launches, with the next generation, STARLAUNCH II, planned for delivering payloads to Low Earth Orbit (LEO). This approach targets a backlog of small satellites awaiting launch and aims to be a cost-effective solution in a market projected to reach over $54 billion by 2030.

Beyond satellite deployment, the company generates revenue through hypersonic research, development, testing, and evaluation (RDT&E) services. The company is currently engaged in a Reg A+ fundraising round to finance the expansion of its development programs, with the goal of completing its first commercial launch.
