Smartotum S.R.L. is a technology company developing a high-performance home automation system that merges the reliability of traditional wired systems with the convenience of modern smart homes. Founded on July 13, 2022, as a spin-off from the Polytechnic University of Turin and the Italian National Research Council (CNR), the company aims to address the common compromises in the home automation market, such as invasive installations, privacy risks, and limited functionality. The company was established by a group of experienced engineers, including CEO Domenico De Guglielmo and CTO Luca Ardito, a researcher at the Polytechnic University. Their work originated from SIFIS-Home, a European research project focused on enhancing the security and resilience of interconnected smart home systems.

The core of Smartotum's offering is a wireless, distributed system that operates locally and independently of the cloud. This architecture ensures user privacy and system stability, as it can function without an internet connection, eliminating risks associated with cloud or network failures. The system is designed for non-invasive, rapid installation, making it suitable for both new constructions and retrofitting existing buildings. All functionalities—including room-specific climate control, security and surveillance, automated blinds, lighting and socket control, energy consumption monitoring, and air quality detection—are managed through a single mobile application. Uniquely, the system's gateways also function as Wi-Fi 6 access points.

Smartotum operates on a B2B and B2C model, targeting end-users such as homeowners, the elderly, and managers of vacation rentals, as well as professional intermediaries like architects, designers, and construction companies. Revenue is generated through direct and indirect sales of its hardware and software, supplemented by post-sale services like maintenance and updates. The company is in a seed funding phase and is actively seeking partnerships with installation companies and firms with established sales networks in the home automation sector to expand its market reach.
