SKULLY AR-1 Augmented Reality Helmet MoreLess

SKULLY represents a complex and cautionary tale in the hardware startup sector, marked by a pioneering vision, significant public interest, and a turbulent operational history. The initial company, Skully Inc., was founded in 2013 by brothers Marcus and Mitchell Weller. Marcus Weller, who holds a Ph.D. in Industrial Psychology, was inspired to create the helmet following a motorcycle accident. His background in human factors and how people interface with technology was central to the product's conception. The company aimed to revolutionize the motorcycle helmet industry by integrating augmented reality (AR) technology. The flagship product, the AR-1 helmet, promised a heads-up display (HUD) showing a 180-degree blindspot camera feed, GPS navigation, and smartphone connectivity for calls and music, all controlled via voice commands.

The concept quickly captured the public's imagination, leading to one of the most successful Indiegogo campaigns at the time, raising approximately $2.5 million from nearly 2,000 backers. This was followed by an additional $11 million in a Series A funding round from venture capitalists including Intel Capital. However, the company faced significant production delays and internal turmoil. In July 2016, amid allegations of misusing corporate funds for personal expenses, the Weller brothers were removed from the company, which subsequently filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy without delivering helmets to the vast majority of its backers.

In 2017, the assets of the defunct Skully Inc. were acquired by Ivan and Rafael Contreras, who established a new entity named Skully Technologies and relocated operations to Atlanta. The Contreras brothers, with a background in turning around technology and industrial ventures like Torrot and Gas Gas, aimed to fulfill the original vision. They demonstrated a new prototype, the Fenix AR, at CES in 2018 and pledged to deliver a helmet to all original Indiegogo backers under a "Make It Right" campaign. This new iteration of the helmet retained the core features of a HUD, a wide-angle rearview camera, and Bluetooth connectivity. Despite these efforts and shipping some units, Skully Technologies also appeared to cease operations by early 2020, with its website and app becoming defunct, marking another chapter of failure for the ambitious project.
