About Shixianghui
Shixianghui, operating under Wuhan Seven Delicious Technology Co., Ltd., carved out a niche in China's competitive community group buying market. The company was established in June 2018, though its foundational model began development in 2017 under the leadership of Dai Shanhuī, the former vice president of e-commerce platform Benlai Life. Dai's extensive experience, including his tenure at Benlai Life where he started promoting community-based models in 2016, and his time at The Beijing News, provided a solid foundation for this venture. He was joined by co-founder Wen Zhiping, whose decade-plus in technology development was instrumental in building the platform's back-end.
The business operated on a community-based e-commerce model, utilizing a network of community leaders to facilitate group purchases. This “pre-sale + self-pickup” system significantly reduced logistical costs and inventory risks. Customers, primarily community residents, would place orders through a WeChat Mini Program or app, and pick up their goods from designated community points. This strategy targeted planned household consumption, focusing on creating large orders for single, popular items. The product range was extensive, initially centered on high-frequency purchases like fresh produce and fruits, but later expanded to include kitchen supplies, household goods, and beauty products. A key part of their strategy was the development of private-label products for household staples like paper towels and garbage bags, allowing for greater control over the supply chain and better margins.
Shixianghui experienced rapid growth, securing its first Angel investment in May 2018, followed by a 100 million RMB Series A in August 2018. By the end of that year, it raised a significant $30 million Series B round led by a TPG-SoftBank joint venture, and in late 2019, it secured a Series B+ round with investment from Tencent. At its peak, the platform operated in over 50 cities and reported monthly sales exceeding 100 million RMB. However, the landscape shifted dramatically in 2020 as tech giants entered the community group buying space, leading to intense price wars. In March 2021, Shixianghui was one of five companies penalized by market regulators for improper pricing tactics. Faced with mounting pressure and losses, the company began to scale back its operations and eventually pivoted its business model. Reports in mid-2021 indicated a transformation towards a new venture, "Ailingshi," a community-based snack and convenience store concept, for which it was reportedly raising new funds.
