MOLI
Cloud-based social e-commerce services platform for businesses, store owners and like-minded shoppers
About MOLI
MOLI.com was established in 2008 as a social commerce platform, positioned at the intersection of social networking and e-commerce. The company was founded by Christos Cotsakos, the former Chairman and CEO of E*TRADE, with Judy Balint, also a veteran of E*TRADE, serving as the President and COO. Cotsakos, a recognized entrepreneur in e-commerce and e-finance, envisioned a platform that catered to a more mature demographic than the teen-centric social networks of the time, targeting professionals and small business owners aged 25 to 55.
The platform's core business was providing a free, online community where individuals and small enterprises—defined as those with fewer than ten employees—could create their own websites and manage multiple, distinct web profiles from a single account. This feature allowed users to maintain separate online personas for their business, social, and family relationships, addressing privacy concerns prevalent on other social networks. The business model was multifaceted, generating revenue through premium services. For a monthly fee of $3.99, users could add a fully functional online store to their site, complete with an AJAX-based shopping cart and payment processing via Google Checkout and PayPal. Additional revenue streams included charges for personalized URLs and options for an ad-free experience.
MOLI's service was built on a proprietary, patent-pending technology platform called CoVibe, designed for scalability and behavioral marketing. The platform was a direct competitor to services like Ning, offering users tools to build their own social networks and e-commerce sites without programming knowledge. Beyond the technical tools, MOLI aimed to be a collaborative hub, launching a Small Business Center that provided resources like expert forums and e-learning courses on topics from marketing to finance through a partnership with E-Myth. The company secured significant initial funding of $29.6 million to support its launch and operations. Despite a strong start and a clear market position, the company is now considered defunct.
