Semma Therapeutics was established with the specific goal of developing a curative therapy for type 1 diabetes (T1D), a disease affecting millions globally. The company was founded in 2014 by scientist Douglas Melton, alongside Robert Millman and Felicia Pagliuca, and is headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In a significant milestone, Vertex Pharmaceuticals acquired Semma Therapeutics in September 2019 for $950 million in cash.
