Rostelecom
One of the biggest national telecommunication companies in Russia
About Rostelecom
In the early 1990s, following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Russia's telecommunications landscape was a fragmented collection of state-run entities. Before 1990, the Ministry of Communications of the USSR was the sole provider of telecom services. This system gave way to a new structure, and on September 23, 1993, Rostelecom was officially established as an open joint-stock company. It was founded to operate the nation's long-distance and international communication lines. This move was part of a broader decentralization and privatization effort across Russia's economy. A pivotal moment in the company's journey was its integration into Svyazinvest in 1994, a state-owned holding company created to manage the government's shares in numerous regional telecom operators. For years, Rostelecom served as the backbone connecting these disparate regional networks. The structure underwent a massive transformation in 2011 when Svyazinvest was liquidated, and its regional subsidiaries were merged into Rostelecom. This consolidation was completed in 2013, creating a single, powerful, and integrated national carrier. This reorganization created a more streamlined company, and the Russian government held a majority stake of over 50% in the newly unified entity. The company has since expanded aggressively, notably acquiring 100% of Tele2 Russia in 2020 to bolster its mobile offerings and become a leading integrated provider of fixed-line, mobile, and digital services. Today, Rostelecom stands as Russia's largest provider of digital services, a journey from a state enterprise to a consolidated public company.
