Quanttus
On a mission to deliver vital intelligence that leads to life-changing health outcomes
About Quanttus
Quanttus, Inc. was a digital health technology firm established in October 2012 by co-founders Shahid Azim, David He, and Richard Bijjani. Headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the company embarked on a mission to address a significant challenge in health tech: creating a cuff-less, continuous blood pressure monitoring system. The founding team possessed a strong background in technology and entrepreneurship; Shahid Azim, a serial entrepreneur and MIT Sloan fellow, had a track record of founding and leading tech ventures, having raised substantial venture capital for previous companies.
The company's core business was the development of a wearable, sensor-equipped wristband designed to capture vast amounts of physiological data—reportedly 50 million data points per person per day—to provide continuous insight into an individual's cardiovascular health. This direct-to-consumer solution was aimed at empowering users to proactively manage their heart health by visualizing trends and understanding changes in their blood pressure. The business model was predicated on selling this hardware, which was unveiled at WIRED Health in 2015. To support its ambitious goals, Quanttus secured a total of $22 million in funding over two rounds, including a $19 million Series A in 2014 led by prominent venture capital firms Khosla Ventures and Matrix Partners.
Despite the significant investment and initial promise, the development of the complex wristband technology proved more challenging than anticipated. As a provisional measure while grappling with hardware delays, the company launched a mobile application that allowed users to manually log blood pressure readings and other lifestyle data. Ultimately, Quanttus was unable to bring its flagship product to market and ceased operations. The company is now considered defunct, representing a notable case of a well-funded startup that failed to deliver on its ambitious vision, though many of its talented staff went on to join leading roles at major technology corporations.
