Qualaroo
Helping SaaS businesses gather quality user research with little time and resources
About Qualaroo
Qualaroo operates as a user feedback and research software company, providing tools that allow businesses to gather real-time insights from visitors on their websites and mobile applications. The company’s business model is subscription-based, offering tiered pricing plans that vary by features and the number of tracked pageviews. Qualaroo serves a diverse client base, including product managers, designers, and marketers at companies such as Zillow, Lenovo, eBay, and TripAdvisor, who utilize the platform to optimize user experience, collect product feedback, and improve conversion rates.
The company's history involves multiple strategic transitions. Initially founded in 2010 as KISSinsights by Hiten Shah, co-founder of Crazy Egg, it was part of KISSmetrics. The technology proved successful and was spun off in 2012, when it was acquired by Sean Ellis, the founder of GrowthHackers, who subsequently renamed it Qualaroo. Ellis, known for coining the term "growth hacking," brought extensive marketing experience from his leadership roles at Dropbox, LogMeIn, and Eventbrite. The venture secured $5.5 million in funding from investors including Polaris Ventures, True Ventures, Index Ventures, First Round Capital, and 500Startups. In 2016, Qualaroo was acquired by the venture equity firm Scaleworks. The most recent acquisition occurred in February 2020, when ProProfs, a provider of SaaS-based customer support and survey tools, purchased Qualaroo to integrate its feedback capabilities into its existing product suite.
Qualaroo's core offering is its proprietary Nudge™ technology, a system designed to pose questions to users at specific moments during their interaction with a site or app. This technology is built to be non-intrusive, targeting users based on behaviors like time on page, number of visits, referring source, or other internal data points. The platform includes features such as customizable survey templates, question branching, advanced targeting, and A/B testing. It also leverages sentiment analysis powered by IBM Watson to process free-form text responses, turning qualitative feedback into structured data. The service can be deployed on websites, mobile sites, and within iOS or Android apps, and it also allows for gathering feedback on design prototypes. By capturing feedback directly in context, Qualaroo aims to deliver insights that are significantly more valuable than those from traditional email surveys.
