About Qspex Technologies

QSpex Technologies, Inc. was an Alpharetta, Georgia-based company founded in 2007 by a team of optical industry veterans, including Dr. Kai Su, who served as the chief scientific officer. Dr. Su, an expert in polymer chemistry with over 31 years in the vision care industry and more than 100 eye care-related patents, created the company's core technology. The company was led by CEO Steve Martin, who previously founded Ciba Vision.

The firm developed a lens manufacturing system aimed at reinvigorating the in-office spectacle lens casting market. This system, known as the QSpex Premium Lens System, allowed eyecare professionals to produce high-quality, premium lenses directly in their offices in about 30-35 minutes. The business model focused on providing this technology to both small independent providers and larger franchises, enabling them to fabricate lenses at the point of sale. This process offered a significant cost reduction of 30 to 50 percent compared to traditional optical lab-surfaced lenses.

QSpex's proprietary technology involved injecting a liquid plastic into a single-use, disposable plastic mold, which was then hardened through a light-curing process. A key feature was that lens treatments, such as anti-reflective and photochromic coatings, were pre-applied to the inside surface of the molds and would transfer to the lens during polymerization. The product lineup included single vision, progressive, polarized, and photochromic lenses. Later, the company pivoted its strategy to launch QSpex Optical Service Centers. These centers acted as local labs, casting lenses on demand and offering same-day delivery of finished eyewear to professional offices and retail locations within a given market.

The company secured substantial funding from investors, including Essex Woodlands Health Ventures and Spindletop Capital, raising a total of over $100 million across multiple rounds. Despite its efforts and significant financial backing, QSpex eventually ceased operations and is now considered a deadpooled company.
