PowerVision, founded in 2002, operated as a medical device development company specializing in fluid-based intraocular lenses (IOLs). The company was co-founded by Barry Cheskin, who also served as the President and CEO. The firm's primary focus was to address the needs of patients with cataracts and presbyopia, a condition involving the gradual loss of the eye's ability to focus on nearby objects.

The core of PowerVision's business was the development of its FluidVision accommodating intraocular lens (AIOL). This product was designed to mimic the eye's natural focusing process. Unlike standard multifocal lenses that split light between different focal points, the FluidVision lens utilized the eye's ciliary muscles to move a small amount of silicone oil within the hollow lens structure. This mechanism changed the shape of the lens, allowing for a continuous range of vision from near to far, potentially offering patients spectacle independence. The lens was implanted into the eye's capsular bag during cataract surgery.

The company's business model revolved around research and development, aiming for the eventual commercialization of its specialized IOLs. The target market consisted of cataract surgery patients who desired a more natural range of vision post-surgery. In March 2019, Alcon, the eye care division of Novartis, acquired PowerVision in a deal valued at $285 million upfront. The agreement also included future milestone payments contingent on regulatory and commercial achievements, starting in 2023. This acquisition marked a significant milestone for PowerVision, integrating its technology into Alcon's portfolio with the goal of accelerating development and bringing the fluid-based IOL to the global market after further clinical trials.
