Proximagen
Drug discovery for central nervous system disorders
About Proximagen
Proximagen, founded in 2003 as a spin-out from King's College London, operates as a biopharmaceutical company with a strategic focus on discovering and developing novel therapeutics for central nervous system (CNS) disorders. The company was established by Peter Jenner, a figure in neurodegenerative disease research, and was initially seed-funded by IP Group plc. This foundation in academic research shaped the company's direction, concentrating on translating scientific insights into viable drug candidates.
The firm's business model centers on building a robust pipeline of drug programs through in-house development, strategic acquisitions, and in-licensing. Proximagen raised significant capital, including a notable £50 million fundraising in 2009, to acquire and advance promising drug development programs. This strategy led to the acquisition of assets from companies like Cambridge Biotech and programs from GlaxoSmithKline, broadening its therapeutic portfolio. The company primarily develops small molecule drugs aimed at treating conditions such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy, and inflammation. Its scientific approach integrates medicinal chemistry, biology, and drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics to progress candidates toward commercialization.
A significant milestone in Proximagen's history was its acquisition by Upsher-Smith Laboratories in August 2012 for an amount that could reach up to $555 million, including contingent payments. This event provided Proximagen with substantial resources to advance its portfolio of approximately 15 programs. The acquisition was intended to combine Proximagen's research and development engine with Upsher-Smith's clinical development and commercialization capabilities. Key programs in its pipeline included therapeutics for epilepsy, a VAP-1 antagonist for inflammation, and a dopamine D1 positive allosteric modulator for Parkinson's disease. Following the acquisition, Kenneth Mulvany, Proximagen's CEO, went on to found the artificial intelligence firm BenevolentAI in 2013, which later acquired Proximagen's UK drug discovery and development facility in 2018.
