Polatis operates as a specialized developer of all-optical circuit switching solutions, a critical segment of the fiber optics industry. The company was established in 2000 and later, in 2005, was officially formed through a merger of optical technology firms in Massachusetts, USA, and the UK. This strategic consolidation brought together talent from institutions like MIT and Cambridge University, creating a deep well of expertise in optics and transmission systems. A key figure in the company's technical leadership and product development journey is Nick Parsons, who joined the startup in 2002 and was instrumental in bringing its technology to market.

The company's business centers on designing and manufacturing high-performance, purely optical switches. Unlike conventional switches that convert optical signals to electrical and back (OEO), Polatis's products manage data streams entirely in the optical domain (OOO). This approach avoids conversion latency and is independent of data rate or protocol, making it a durable solution for networks as data transmission speeds increase. The core of its product line is the patented DirectLight™ beam-steering technology, which uses piezoelectric actuators to physically align light beams between input and output fibers with minimal signal loss. This technology uniquely allows for the switching of 'dark fibers'—fibers not currently carrying light—enabling pre-provisioning of network paths.

Polatis serves a diverse client base across telecommunications, data centers, government and defense, and test and measurement sectors. For data centers, its switches facilitate the creation of low-latency hybrid network architectures required for scalable cloud services. In telecommunications, the switches help manage ever-increasing data volumes, supporting the evolution toward software-defined networks (SDN).
