About Playdemic

Founded in 2010 by lifelong friends and serial entrepreneurs Paul Gouge and Alex Rigby, Playdemic is a mobile games studio headquartered near Manchester, UK. The duo, who bonded over computer games at age eight, have a history of successful ventures, including the founding and selling of BattleMail and Rockpool Games. Their journey reflects a keen ability to anticipate and capitalize on emerging trends, from the dot-com boom to the rise of Facebook and mobile gaming.

Playdemic's history is marked by a series of strategic acquisitions. In 2011, it was briefly acquired by RockYou before the founders bought it back the same year. A significant milestone occurred in 2017 when the company was acquired by Warner Bros.' TT Games, shortly after the launch of its blockbuster title, "Golf Clash". The studio's trajectory culminated in a landmark $1.4 billion all-cash acquisition by Electronic Arts (EA) in September 2021, a move designed to bolster EA's growing mobile portfolio and leadership in the sports genre. The founders, Gouge and Rigby, eventually departed Playdemic in 2022 to start a new venture.

The studio's business model is centered on free-to-play mobile games, monetized through in-app purchases and, to a lesser extent, in-game advertising. The company's flagship product, "Golf Clash," is a real-time, one-on-one multiplayer golf game that has been a massive commercial success. With over 80 million downloads globally, the game became one of the top-grossing mobile sports games in the US and UK. The gameplay involves quick, turn-based matches where players pay an entry fee in a soft currency (coins) to compete for a larger prize pot and chests. These chests contain cards to upgrade equipment, such as clubs, and a hard currency (gems) which can be used to unlock chests faster, buy premium golf balls with enhanced stats, or purchase coins. This dual-currency system, combined with a compelling competitive loop and consumable power-ups, drives the game's revenue, which reached approximately $185 million in 2020.
