Pelican Imaging

Pelican Imaging Corporation, founded in 2008 by Kartik Venkataraman and Aman Jabbi, was a venture-backed firm that developed computational array cameras for the consumer electronics market. The company's primary innovation was a light-field camera module designed to be significantly thinner than conventional mobile cameras, addressing a key design constraint in smartphones. This was achieved by using an array of small, inexpensive lenses and sensors—its reference design featured a 4x4 grid—to capture 16 slightly different images simultaneously.

The core of Pelican's business model was not manufacturing but licensing its technology, which combined novel optics, sensors, and powerful software algorithms. These algorithms would process the multiple low-resolution images to synthesize a single high-resolution photo with a detailed, pixel-level depth map. This technology offered users a range of post-capture capabilities, including the ability to refocus an image, focus on multiple subjects, change backgrounds, and perform 3D measurements and modeling. The processing was resource-intensive, relying on the advancements in mobile processors, like the Snapdragon 800, to function in real-time.

Pelican Imaging raised a total of $37 million in funding over several rounds from investors including Globespan Capital Partners, Granite Ventures, InterWest Partners, IQT, Qualcomm Ventures, and NGP Capital. The firm targeted mobile device manufacturers as its primary clients, licensing its technology and design expertise for integration into smartphones and tablets. In November 2016, the technology assets and patent portfolio of Pelican Imaging were acquired by Tessera Technologies, Inc. (now part of Adeia). The acquisition aimed to integrate Pelican's depth-sensing and multi-camera solutions into Tessera's FotoNation subsidiary to accelerate the development of computational imaging solutions for mobile, drone, automotive, and AR/VR applications.
