Builds multiplayer crypto software MoreLess
PartyDAO operates as a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) focused on developing software that facilitates multiplayer experiences within the cryptocurrency landscape. The organization was formed in May 2021, originating from a Twitter conversation initiated by Denis Nazarov, the founder of Mirror. The initial idea for a product to pool funds for NFT auctions, called PartyBid, was prototyped by Anish Agnihotri, who then used the smart contracts to win an NFT auction, proving the concept's viability. This early success led to a crowdfund on Mirror that raised 25 ETH. Following the crowdfund, backers received $PARTY governance tokens and formed a team to build out the first product.
The core offering, PartyBid, enables groups of individuals to pool capital to collectively bid on and purchase Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs). This transforms the single-player experience of buying digital assets into a collaborative, social event. When a party successfully wins an auction, contributors receive tokens proportional to their contribution, representing fractional ownership of the acquired NFT. This model lowers the financial barrier to entry for high-value NFTs and distributes the associated risks among participants. The platform operates on the Ethereum blockchain and integrates with auction platforms like Zora and Foundation for its frontend, while utilizing Fractional.art for the backend fractionalization process. The Party Protocol, an extension of this vision, provides a standardized framework for on-chain group coordination, encompassing formation, decision-making, and resource distribution. Governance within a "Party" is conducted through an on-chain voting system where members use their membership NFTs to vote on proposals.
PartyDAO's business model includes on-chain revenue, and it has also secured significant external funding. In June 2022, the organization raised $16.4 million in a funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), with participation from other notable investors like Standard Crypto, Dragonfly Capital, and Uniswap Ventures. If a bidding party is successful, PartyBid takes a 2.5% fee in ETH and a 2.5% fee in the fractional tokens created for that specific party, with the revenue directed to the PartyDAO treasury to support further development. Key figures involved in PartyDAO include John Palmer, who serves as the project lead, and co-founders Danny Aranda and Anna Carroll. Palmer, a former software engineer at Snapchat and founder of a previous crypto startup, plays a central role in guiding the product and organization.
