About Pano Logic

Pano Logic, founded in 2006, operated in the computer software and hardware industry, specializing in desktop virtualization. The company positioned itself as the originator of the "zero-client" concept, a paradigm shift from traditional thin-client technologies. Its business model revolved around selling a complete, purpose-built Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) solution. This offering was designed to centralize computing resources, moving all processing and software from individual desktops to a data center, thereby reducing IT management overhead, enhancing security, and lowering energy consumption. The target market included corporations and organizations seeking to simplify their desktop infrastructure, such as healthcare providers, universities, and manufacturing firms.

The core of Pano Logic's offering was the Pano System. This integrated solution comprised the Pano Device (the zero client), Pano Manager software for central administration, and the Pano Direct Service for communication between the hardware and the virtual machines. The Pano Device was a compact hardware box with no local CPU, memory, operating system, or moving parts, consuming significantly less power than a standard PC. It connected peripherals like monitors, keyboards, and USB devices over a network to a virtual desktop running on server infrastructure powered by hypervisors from VMware or Microsoft. The company also offered Pano Express, a bundled package for 50 users that included VMware vSphere Essentials, Windows 7 licenses, and server hardware, and Pano Remote, a USB key for secure remote access.

Despite securing significant venture capital funding, including investments from Goldman Sachs and Mayfield Fund, Pano Logic faced intense competition. The market shifted as competitors like Wyse introduced PCoIP-based zero clients that were perceived to offer better performance, and VMware's own solutions gained traction. Pano Logic ceased operations in October 2012. In March 2013, ProPalms (later renamed Thinspace) acquired the rights to support Pano Logic's customer base. After the company's closure, its FPGA-based zero-client devices became popular among hardware hacking enthusiasts due to their affordability and capabilities.
