Overture Networks

Telecom · Morrisville, United States · Founded 2000

With hundreds of CSP customers worldwide Overture is revolutionizing the way we all connect, communicate and captivate MoreLess

Overture Networks, established in July 2000 by co-founders Jeff Reedy and Prayson Pate, specialized in designing and marketing networking and telecommunications equipment. The founders identified a market need to help telecom service providers transition from legacy networks to packet-based technology to support a growing array of data, voice, and video services. Jeff Reedy, a graduate of Duke and Stanford Universities with a background at AT&T Bell Laboratories and as a co-founder of T3 Technologies, brought significant experience in building network solution businesses. The company was headquartered in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.

Overture focused on developing converged packet access platforms for Carrier Ethernet services, targeting clients such as competitive and incumbent local exchange carriers, cable companies, and wholesale ISPs. Its business model centered on manufacturing and selling equipment that enabled these service providers to offer high-capacity Ethernet services over various physical media, including fiber, copper, and TDM. The product portfolio addressed applications like business services, mobile backhaul, and Ethernet transport at speeds ranging from 1 Mbit/s to 10 Gbit/s. Key products included the ISG (Intelligent Services Gateway) series and platforms supporting optical Ethernet, Ethernet over bonded copper, and Ethernet over TDM/SONET/SDH/PDH.

A significant milestone in the company's history was the merger with Hatteras Networks in March 2011, which positioned Overture as a market leader in Ethernet over Copper (EoC) solutions and expanded its geographic reach into Europe and Asia Pacific. The company also entered the software-defined networking (SDN) space in March 2012 with the launch of its Ensemble OSA, an open architecture for network functions virtualization (NFV). In September 2012, Mike Aquino took over as President and CEO, with Jeff Reedy transitioning to Chief Strategy Officer. The company's growth was fueled by over $129 million in funding across multiple rounds from investors including Intel Capital, Tenaya Capital, and QuestMark Partners. Ultimately, in January 2016, Overture Networks was acquired by ADVA Optical Networking for $35 million, plus a potential $5 million earn-out, a strategic move by ADVA to expand its NFV product portfolio and enhance its Carrier Ethernet capabilities.
