Transmode Systems, founded in 2000 and headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, established itself as a significant provider of packet-optical networking solutions. The company was formed in March 2005 through the merger of two Stockholm-based private telecom companies, Transmode Systems and Lumentis, to meet the growing global demand for scalable and cost-effective optical networking. A key figure in the company's trajectory was Karl Thedéen, who served as CEO from 2007. His leadership was instrumental in navigating the company from a small enterprise through a successful Initial Public Offering (IPO) on the NASDAQ OMX Stockholm in May 2011, and ultimately to its acquisition.

The company specialized in developing and providing packet-optical transport solutions for fixed-line and mobile network operators, service providers, large enterprises, and public institutions. Its client base spanned over 45 countries, with more than 500 customers. Transmode's business was centered on the metro networks segment, addressing the critical need for increased capacity driven by the surge in video, cloud computing, and mobile data traffic. The business model revolved around the sale of its networking hardware and software, which enabled clients to expand the capacity, flexibility, and functionality of their metro and regional networks. The company’s products were foundational components for next-generation high-speed optical networks, supporting services like broadband and mobile data backhaul.

Transmode's core offerings were based on Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) and packet transport technologies. Its product portfolio included the TM-Series of optical transport platforms, such as the TM-301 and TM-3000, which were known for being low-power, high-density solutions. These platforms featured transponders, muxponders, and ROADMs (Reconfigurable Optical Add-Drop Multiplexers). A notable aspect of their technology was the "Native Packet Optical 2.0" architecture, designed to provide cost-efficient Ethernet services, ultra-low latency, and reduced power consumption. The solutions allowed for the transport of data, voice, and video traffic by increasing the efficiency of optical fiber networks. In August 2015, U.S.-based Infinera acquired Transmode in a cash and stock deal valued at approximately $350 million. The acquisition was a strategic move for Infinera to expand its portfolio into the metro packet-optical market, complementing its existing strength in long-haul networking and creating an end-to-end provider to address a market estimated to be worth over $15 billion.
