Outpost Medicine
Developing novel therapeutics for urologic and gastrointestinal disorders
About Outpost Medicine
Outpost Medicine was a biopharmaceutical company established to develop and commercialize new treatments for urologic and gastrointestinal disorders. The company, now listed as no longer active, was formed in March 2016 as a joint venture between Takeda Pharmaceutical and the venture capital firm Frazier Healthcare Partners. It was co-founded by two venture partners from Frazier: Dr. Tachi Yamada, a gastroenterologist with an extensive background leading research at major pharmaceutical companies like Takeda and GlaxoSmithKline, and David Socks, a seasoned healthcare entrepreneur. The business model centered on in-licensing promising clinical-stage assets to develop them further.

Upon its launch, Outpost Medicine secured the exclusive worldwide rights from Takeda to develop OP-233, a clinical-stage compound for treating stress urinary incontinence (SUI). This initiative was supported by an initial $41 million Series A financing round led by Frazier Healthcare Partners, with participation from Adams Street Partners, Novo A/S, and Vivo Capital. However, the company later discontinued the OP-233 program in November 2017 due to unspecified safety issues discovered during human trials. Concurrently, Outpost announced an extension of its Series A round, bringing the total to $61 million, with Takeda's venture arm joining as a new investor. These funds were redirected to advance a new lead candidate, OP-687, an oral therapy intended for overactive bladder (OAB) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The company further expanded its pipeline in May 2018 by licensing a preclinical compound from Arena Pharmaceuticals aimed at genitourinary disorders.
The company's leadership evolved, with Scott Byrd, a former Eli Lilly executive, appointed as CEO in November 2017 to steer the new clinical focus, succeeding interim CEO David Socks. Outpost established a dual-location operational structure, with its headquarters and U.S. operations in Indianapolis, while its scientific and medical teams were based in London. Despite raising a total of $97 million over two funding rounds and assembling an experienced team, the company ultimately ceased operations.
