About NeurogesX

NeurogesX, Inc. was a biopharmaceutical company focused on developing and commercializing pain management therapies. Founded in 1998, the company was based in San Mateo, California. Its primary area of concentration was neuropathic pain, a complex and often debilitating condition arising from nerve damage. The company's business model revolved around the classic biopharmaceutical pipeline of drug discovery, clinical development, regulatory approval, and subsequent commercialization. Revenue was anticipated from the sale of its approved products.

The company's lead product candidate was Qutenza (capsaicin 8% patch), a localized treatment for postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), which is nerve pain following a shingles infection. Qutenza was a dermal patch that delivered a high concentration of synthetic capsaicin directly to the site of pain. This approach was designed to provide long-lasting pain relief for up to three months with a single one-hour application, offering a distinct administration profile compared to daily oral medications. The mechanism of action involved desensitizing and temporarily defunctionalizing the pain-sensing TRPV1-expressing nociceptors in the skin.

NeurogesX achieved a significant milestone with the approval of Qutenza by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in 2009 for the treatment of peripheral neuropathic pain (excluding diabetic neuropathy) and by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2009 for postherpetic neuralgia. Following these approvals, the company entered into a commercialization agreement with Astellas Pharma Europe for the marketing rights of Qutenza in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Despite gaining regulatory approvals, NeurogesX faced commercial challenges and financial difficulties. The company ultimately filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2013 and its assets, including Qutenza, were acquired by Acorda Therapeutics.
