Netcordia
Network automation software for enterprise networks
About Netcordia
Netcordia, Inc. operated as a specialized developer of software for network configuration and change management (NCCM). The company was established in 2000 by Terry Slattery, who holds the distinction of being the first individual not employed by Cisco to achieve the Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert certification. The founding of Netcordia followed Slattery's experience with his prior company, Chesapeake Computer Consultants, which ceased operations following the downturn in the technology training market after the dot-com bubble burst.
The firm's core offering was NetMRI, a network appliance designed to automate the oversight of network device configurations. This product automatically gathered data from a variety of multi-vendor network devices, including configuration files, SNMP, and event logs. NetMRI's function was to track any alterations made to a network, analyze the relationship between these changes and the network's overall health, and issue alerts to help network managers resolve issues that could lead to downtime. The software also assisted organizations in meeting various regulatory compliance requirements such as PCI DSS, HIPAA, and SOX. In September 2009, Netcordia expanded its product delivery by releasing a downloadable, VMware virtual appliance version of NetMRI.
Netcordia's business model centered on selling its NetMRI product, which catered to a diverse client base across sectors like healthcare, financial services, government, and academia. Notable customers included the United States Army, TIAA-CREF, Duke University, and Neiman Marcus. The company was privately held and secured $17.6 million in funding from venture capital firms such as Novak Biddle Venture Partners, Trinity Ventures, and Gold Hill Capital. A significant milestone for the company occurred in May 2010, when it was acquired by Infoblox for an undisclosed amount, marking its exit as an independent entity.
