Nanochip
Very high capacity removable storage chips for mp3 players, digital cameras, cell phones, pdas and computers
About Nanochip
Nanochip, Inc. was a technology startup founded in 1996, headquartered in Fremont, California. The company focused on developing advanced micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) for silicon data storage chips, aiming to serve the consumer electronics market. Its stated goal was to produce non-volatile memory with very high capacity and high performance at a price point competitive with flash memory solutions.
From its inception, Nanochip attracted notable investors, including Intel Capital and JK&B Capital, raising a total of $47.4 million in its early stages. A significant milestone was the completion of a $14 million financing round announced in January 2008, intended to finalize the development of its first prototypes for design verification and customer sampling. The firm's intellectual property was substantial, having been granted seven U.S. patents with an additional 34 applications filed. The technology promised to deliver storage capacities exceeding 100 GB per chip set, with a roadmap toward terabyte-level storage in the future, at a significantly lower cost than flash memory.
Despite its early promise and strong investor backing, the company faced insurmountable financial challenges. Nanochip required an additional $70 million to move its technology into full-scale production. The high capital requirements, combined with a competitive market and a difficult environment for venture capital investment in the semiconductor sector, created a critical hurdle. After its investment banker advised ceasing fundraising efforts, the company began dismissing employees and ultimately ceased all operations in May, subsequently seeking a buyer for its intellectual property.
